from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The medal for outstanding achievements in the geology of the German Democratic Republic was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on June 16, 1983 in one step by the Council of Ministers of the GDR by its chairman Willi Stoph . It was used to recognize outstanding achievements in the following areas:

  • Research into the mineral raw material base of the GDR and its economically effective use,
  • the development of an effective raw material and deposit management
  • extraordinary achievements in socialist competition to fulfill and surpass economic tasks in the field of geology and mineral soil management.

The medal itself could only be awarded once to one and the same person. The awarding of the medal, which took place annually by the Minister of Geology on the occasion of the miner's day and the energy worker, was presented to the borrower in a festive setting along with a certificate and a bonus of 1,000 marks. However, the maximum number of medals awarded annually was severely limited to just 20.

Appearance and wearing style

The gold-plated medal with a diameter of 30 mm shows on its obverse the symbolic representation of a drilling rig and a winding tower, both of which stand on a geological layer profile. The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the inscription at the top: FOR / OUTSTANDING / LEISTUNGEN / IN DER GEOLOGIE / DER GDR and the small state coat of arms of the GDR underneath. This is flanked by a branch of laurel on the left and right. The medal was worn on a clasp in the color combination: blue-black-red-brown, which vertically make up the total width of the width in equal parts. This color combination symbolizes the raw materials water, crude oil, natural gas, coal and ore. In addition, a round 10 mm diameter golden miniature plate is placed in the center, which shows the symbol of mining, iron and mallets. The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest, as was the accompanying interim clasp of the same quality, which also shows the attached miniature of the mining industry.
