Appearance and wearing style

The bronze-colored medal with a diameter of 30 millimeters was awarded in two models, the first form from 1957 to 1971 and the second from 1972 to the Unification Treaty in 1990. The clasp was 24 × 11 millimeters in size and covered with dark blue ribbon - bounded on both sides by a red stripe. The medal itself adorned the front of the first model with an arm protruding from the flood, to which a hand is held out, together with a laurel branch embossed on the top left . On the back was the inscription: FOR SELF-LESS WORK • IN • FIGHTING • DISASTERS . In the second model, the drawing was smaller and the inscription that was previously embossed on the back was moved to the front. The new back showed the state coat of arms of the GDR, surrounded by the words: GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC . The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest.
