Converted Bayer skyscraper with a new media facade

The media facade , also known as the Bayer media sculpture , was a multimedia installation on the facade of the Bayer high-rise , the former Bayer AG headquarters in Leverkusen .

Due to ongoing problems, Bayer announced the demolition of the building on January 20, 2011.

history

In 1963 the building, known internally as W1, was used as the new Bayer AG headquarters. The skyscraper was at that time with 122 meters the highest and most modern office buildings in Europe. The Bayer Group left the building in 2002 and the ruins were to be demolished in the following years.

In 2007, the architect and event manager at Bayer-AG, Wolfram Lusche, had the idea of removing the entire interior of the building down to the core and the floors and instead encasing it with a media facade . The work dragged on for two years and was initially finished in mid-2009. Commissioning was always delayed after the first tests were unsatisfactory, as many LEDs failed after a short time.

Due to the persistent problems, an expert opinion was commissioned, according to which the technical concept developed by specialist companies requires extensive improvements in order to be able to put the media facade into operation permanently. As a result, Bayer announced on January 20, 2011 that the media facade would be torn down.

technology

The building, 122 meters high, 70 meters wide and 20 meters deep, was surrounded by a 17,500 square meter steel mesh. This mesh served as a holder for a total of 5.6 million light-emitting diodes (two red, two green and one blue LEDs as one unit). On the inside, the steel mats were covered with a green plastic layer, which, together with indirect blue interior lighting, was supposed to improve the contrast of the picture.

During the day, a screen measuring 40 by 40 meters was to show pictures or films from the Bayer plant on two sides of the building. At night, the entire area on all four sides of the building would have resulted in an all-round image area.
