The Medienhaus Mülheim an der Ruhr is located on Synagogenplatz in the city center and is the location of the city library in the MedienHaus with its over 220,000 media. In addition, there are the tourist office of the Mülheim City Marketing and Tourism GmbH (MST), the cinema "Rio" and a cafe. The four-storey building with a usable area of 6,700 m² was built between 2007 and 2009, the cost was 41.2 million euros.
history
The further development of the library in Mülheim an der Ruhr has been discussed since 1996. A preliminary study was carried out in April 1998 to improve the location. The results were available in December 1999. In autumn 2000 an ideas competition was prepared and in 2002 the new location was fixed with Viktoriaplatz (since November 9, 2009: Synagogenplatz) in the city center.
In July 2004, the city council decided on a Europe-wide tender as a PPP project and the SKE company was awarded the contract after a resolution by the council. The media company should open its doors in February 2009. The demolition of the old savings bank building on Viktoriaplatz began in October 2007 and in November 2008 Mülheim celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the media company. The handover took place in May 2009. On July 18, 2009, the central library closed at its old location on Rathausmarkt and the move to the new library building began, which was completed in August.
Half a year late, the library of the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr opened its doors in the new media house on August 22, 2009. The café in the media house was only added in October 2009 because there were problems with the interior design. The SKE company has taken on the support of the media company (e.g. for janitorial services) for 25 years.
Building equipment
The house has a garage in which the library's book bus was parked. The building consists of an air-supported concrete core activation. This system climates the media house to between 20 and 21 degrees. The building has a main staircase and two emergency stairs.
Facilities

The library houses over 220,000 media (books, CDs, DVDs, sheet music, magazines and games) on an area of 4200 m². All media were provided with an RFID chip, which should ensure a faster process for borrowing and returning. The new library card also contains an RFID chip. Borrowing and returning are also possible at terminals via self-booking.
There are 12 free PC places for internet use and a writing PC and a coin copier. On the 1st floor there is an inner courtyard with seating and a recording studio, on the 2nd floor there is a roof terrace. Each floor has its own color, information and different subject areas. The floors can be reached via the main staircase or the elevator.
Tourist information of the Mülheim City Marketing and Tourism GmbH
The tourist information of Mülheimer Stadtmarketing und Tourismus GmbH also moved into the media house from Schloßstraße and started operations on June 29, 2009. MST has to share a 200 m² room with the RWE / RWW customer center . The room is divided by a glass facade. The tourist information office is also an advance booking office.
Rio cinema
In 1995 the only art film theater in the city of Mülheim, which belongs to the Essen film art theater , opened. After the game break in March 2007, operations in the media house continued in October 2009. The cinema has 80 seats and one wheelchair space. Access to the cinema is also suitable for the disabled. The cinema has a changing program.
Coffee shop
On October 2nd, 2009, after some problems with the interior design, a café opened on the ground floor, to the left of the library entrance. The café is run by Hermann ( pastry chef ) and Marion Appenzeller.
