The media playback ( English Media Player ) was an audio and video playback program developed by Microsoft , which was supplied with various Microsoft Windows versions.

It was first published as part of Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions 1.0. Up to Windows 95, media playback was the standard program for playing audio and video files, from Windows 98 onwards it was replaced by Windows Media Player , but it was still included in Windows XP . In contrast to its successor, media playback offers the option of sending the output to a specific device. B. MIDI files are sent to a sequencer .

In newer Windows versions (from Windows Vista ) the media playback is no longer available, but still works if you copy the mplay32.exe from an older Windows version.

As free software , the Media Player Classic was created deliberately based on media playback and as its further development .
