The Media Player Classic ( MPC ) is a compact media player - Software for Windows . The classic interface of this application, which is deliberately not to be changed by skins , is based on the older version 6.4 of Windows Media Player . Nevertheless, the MPC is a completely new program that has all the usual options and features of a modern media player.

History and license

Media Player Classic was developed by a programmer named Gabest . The program is free software and was released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). At first it was developed as a conventional closed source application, but later the developer made it an open source project called guliverkli . The name guliverkli originally came from the Hungarian animated series Adolars Fantastic Adventures .

There are a large number of additional codecs and plug-ins on the SourceForge project page so that proprietary formats such as RealMedia or QuickTime are also supported.

The original Media Player Classic has not been further developed since spring 2006 due to time constraints, the last official version is 6.4.9. It is marked as beta version, but the project is in fact inactive.

As a result, errors within the newly founded Guliverkli2 project under version number 6.4.9.1 were eliminated, security gaps closed and new libraries used. This project is now also marked as inactive.

Media Player Classic - Home Cinema / Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (current fork)

The Media Player Classic - Home Cinema ( MPC-HC ) is based on version 6.4.9 of the Media Player Classic. To eliminate errors and close security gaps, new functions such as hardware acceleration via DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) have been integrated; 64-bit versions are also available. The MPC-HC can also be used as a DVB player due to the increasing number of bug fixes and extended functions .

When version 1.7.13 was released on July 16, 2017, it was announced that the project will be discontinued due to a lack of developers with C / C ++ knowledge. The last commit on GitHub was on August 27, 2017.

At the beginning of 2018 a fork of version 1.7.13 was created. Since then, the internal libraries have been updated by a developer, bugs and security holes have been eliminated and minor improvements have been implemented. Since the official website cannot be maintained, you will only be kept up-to-date on this fork via the GitHub page.

Media Player Classic - Black Edition

The Media Player Classic - Black Edition ( MPC-BE ) is an MPC fork that has existed since autumn 2012 and is based on MPC and MPC-HC . It is also open source and, like all of the creations mentioned, is available on SourceForge. As the name suggests, this MPC variant starts with an anthracite-black user interface. In contrast to most other media players including the MPC-HC u. a. via a preview in the navigation bar / timeline (similar to YouTube ), provided this is activated in the settings.

This player is again available as a 32- and 64-bit version. Hardware acceleration via DirectX Video Acceleration is integrated as with the MPC-HC. The current version is 1.5.5 (built 5274) from May 27, 2020.

Any unstable developments are also provided. By default, the user on SourceForge receives the link for an installation file that was generated from the last revision (with SVN number).

particularities

The Media Player Classic versions can play VCDs , SVCDs and DVDs without installing additional software or codecs. Codecs for MPEG-2 video with support for subtitles and codecs for LPCM , MP2 , AC3 and DTS audio are also built in. In addition, an improved MPEG splitter that supports subtitles on SVCDs and enables direct playback of VCDs and SVCDs using its VCD / SVCD / XCD reader is included. The MPC also contain a screenshot function that is also able to take screenshots with subtitles. All in all, almost all known media formats can be played with the MPC, e.g. B. also incomplete or fragmentary AVI files.

MPC-HC 64bit with Toolbar Glossy

As an additional special feature of the two further developments (MPC-HC and MPC-BE), they can now be individualized to a limited extent by exchanging the toolbar images for alternative button graphics and are no longer dependent on the predefined graphics. This is partly possible in different sizes. The basic intention of not creating a playful media player will, however, be pursued. The framework and appearance of the MPC-HC and MPC-BE thus remain determined by the respective Windows topic.

With the support of DXVA , it is possible to play back videos via the graphics processor using GPU acceleration , which significantly relieves the main processor with high image resolutions (HD video) . In this way, older systems can also use corresponding video sources, which explains part of the popularity.
