Mediterranea Saving Humans is an Italian non-governmental organization . It was founded around the Mediterranean to monitor the situation and in distress guessed boat people to save, after the bulk of other NGOs from the Italian authorities made by legal hurdles largely incapacitated. To this end, the group operates the ships Mare Jonio and Alex under the Italian flag. The project is financially and organizationally supported by activists from the German Sea-Watch association.

Ship confiscation in May 2019

On May 9, 2019, the crew of the Mare Jonio, together with the Italian coast guard , rescued around 66 people from the sea , whose rubber dinghy had capsized . The ship took on 30 people. The Minister of the Interior first announced that both ships would not be allowed to bring the people ashore, which was later allowed. The ship then headed north, where it was seized by Italian authorities and escorted to Lampedusa . According to the interior minister, the ship was confiscated there in the evening and an investigation was initiated into favor of illegal immigration. The activists reported a search but denied the confiscation. The Agrigento public prosecutor's office rejected the preventive seizure of the ship requested by Interior Minister Salvini on May 10, 2019 due to a lack of evidence.

5th July 2019

On July 5, 2019, the ship Alex , a sailing yacht that was actually only intended as an escort ship for the Mare Jonio , reached the waters off Lampedusa with 54 people on board, recorded the day before. As with the Sea-Watch 3 shortly before , the authorities initially refused permission to enter. The Italian government refused to admit the people to Lampedusa and referred to Malta, about 100 km away, as an alternative. The spokeswoman for the organization, Alessandra Sciurba, declared on July 6, 2019 that the journey would be too long and impossible for passengers to make. On the afternoon of July 6, 2019, the skipper Tommaso Stella entered the port of Lampedusa without a permit. The ship was overloaded with the recovered people and the crew of eleven by more than three times the permitted capacity. From a nautical point of view, casting off is therefore not permitted.

Denied entry to the port in August 2019

On August 28, around 100 people were rescued from the rescue ship Mare Jonio from a sinking refugee boat. According to survivors, 6 people, including babies, had previously drowned. The Italian coast guard brought children and women ashore in Lampedusa. The Mare Jonio and the remaining 34 rescued people were forbidden to call at an Italian port, as the operators would not obey laws and provoke emergencies.

The organization announced in mid-March 2020 that it would cease using its two ships, Mare Ionio and Alex, due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
