Glest is a computer strategy game with real-time 3D graphics . The game is published as free software under the GPL and is platform-independent .

As the development of Glest came to a standstill, supporters of the project founded the spin-off MegaGlest . Not only is it actively developed, but it also contains additional material that has been contributed by Glest players over the years, as well as new features.

technology

The game is programmed in C ++ and can be modified using XML . In version 3.0 a multiplayer function was implemented, which can be used via the Internet and LAN . A master server , with the help of which an overview of ongoing multiplayer rounds from other players would be possible, is not available in Glest, but in MegaGlest. In addition to the included material, Glest can be expanded with additional maps , units, translations and modifications . Such contributions are collected in the official forum and supported in their development.

The graphic is displayed using OpenGL . Figures and objects are created as 3D models that can be viewed in the game from any angle. During the game, the view of the characters, including shadows, is constantly recalculated.

Game flow

Glest takes place in a medieval fantasy world in which two parties (seven in MegaGlest) fight each other: the magicians and the technicians. The player can choose between these two parties and then compete against computer-controlled or human opponents.

The gameplay of Glest is similar to that of Warcraft III . A number of units and objects are assigned to the player on a map. At the beginning of the game, each player receives a minimal set of units and objects on an initially largely unknown map. The units must first be used to collect resources such as gold, wood and stones. With the help of these resources, further units with different properties can be summoned. As the game progresses, your own units fight against those of your opponents. The aim of the game is to get the upper hand at the end and to eliminate the opponent (s).

In Glest, the appearance and properties of the characters differ depending on whether the player has chosen a technician or a magician. The units of the technicians use a technology roughly based on the Middle Ages. They fight with swords, bows and arrows, catapults or from horseback with lances. In the advanced stage, aircraft powered by muscle power also use unrealistic means. In the case of the magicians' units, on the other hand, the options for action are based on the imagination of black magic . Demons are summoned, empty armor made to fight and fireballs are thrown. Part of a successful tactic is to target the units according to their strengths.

The opponents can be controlled by the computer or played by humans over the Internet. Up to four (MegaGlest: eight) players can take part in a round. It is possible to form coalitions - even with a player played by the computer.
