Megan J. Smith (born October 1964 in Buffalo ) is an American engineer and manager . In September 2014, she was appointed Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the United States by President Barack Obama .

Life

Megan Smith studied mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Among other things, she was CEO of the media company PlanetOut and worked to bring more women into technology and engineering professions. For nine years she led the Google team for new business development, where she was responsible for the introduction of Google Earth and Google Map . Until her appointment as CTO, she was Vice President of Google's research arm Google X , which developed Google Glass computer glasses and self-driving cars.

The position of Chief Technology Officer in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (dt .: Office of Science and Technology Policy of the White House Barack Obama led) one after taking office in 2009.
