Multiple loan

A multiple borrowing occurs when a word from a language of origin is borrowed multiple times (at different times, across different languages) in the receiving language ( target language ) .

Examples

The common German words Palast and Palais are both borrowed from French ( palais , also pales ); The palace was adopted into German in the Middle High German period (12th century), the palace in the 17th century. Bär and Abundant Paul name a number of other examples, including Park , which with its meaning "enclosure" was taken over from the French parc in the 15th century, with the meaning "garden area" at the beginning of the 17th century .
