Milestone (long arch)

Whole milestone in Langenbogen

The Prussian milestone in Langenbogen is on the western outskirts of Langenbogen ( Teutschenthal municipality ) in the Saale district in Saxony-Anhalt.

The Prussian Chaussee leading from Langenbogen to Eisleben was a section of the Chaussee Berlin – Kassel, which was built between 1824 and 1826. The predecessor road Halle – Langenbogen, which was built under French direction in 1809 and 1810, only led to the Royal Langenbogen lignite mine. It was probably cleared of the milestones in the course of the conversion from miles to kilometers in the 1870s, because these can only be verified via map entries. The first all-mile obelisk west of Halle was at the Granau cemetery . While there is not a single milestone between Halle and Langenbogen, the majority of the milestones between Langenbogen and Sangerhausen have been preserved.

Although all the milestones between Langenbogen and Nordhausen correspond to the principle of small bell (quarter mile), large bell (half a mile), obelisk (whole mile), the whole milestone of Langenbogen has a different shape that has not yet been finally clarified. Most likely, however, is that the road embankment built here could not have supported a complete all-mile obelisk with benches and that the milestone would then have sunk relatively quickly. A replacement stone was therefore chosen, which was provided with a simple oval, as known from the older type of Prussian milestone.

The stone was made of light-colored sandstone, which probably comes from Nebra, and marked the distance of 24 miles from Dönhoffplatz in Berlin on the Chaussee Berlin – Kassel . It is not possible to say exactly whether and how deep it has sunk into the embankment, but it protrudes more than a meter from the ground. Although the stone is not mentioned in the list of monuments , like every milestone in Saxony-Anhalt, it is under monument protection as a small monument .
