Neue Kammerspiele - home of the Meininger Puppet Theater

The Meininger Puppet Theater was founded in the summer of 1986 at the Meininger Theater. The first director was Rolf Thieme. The first premiere took place on October 2, 1986 in the Meiningen Volkshaus with Goethe's Faust . Other productions in the early days were "Sleeping Beauty" and "Pinocchio". In 1987 Maria C. Zoppeck took over the puppet theater as director, which at the time consisted of 16 members. In addition to the performances at various venues in the theater town of Meiningen, numerous tours led through the then district of Suhl ( GDR ). After the political change , the Meiningen puppet theater made its first tours throughout Germany and other European countries.

Today the predominantly independent, internationally operating puppet theater consists of a tribe of six puppeteers and technicians under the direction of Maria C. Zoppeck, plus more than a dozen guest players and directors (as of 2011). The repertoire includes pieces for all ages, written by contemporary authors or from the world of fairy tales and legends. The best-known and most successful pieces shown worldwide include and were "Fastnachtspiele" by Hans Sachs , The steadfast tin soldier and the condom of horror . The puppet theater ensemble appears at around 150 performances annually, a third of them in the Neue Kammerspiele , the new home of the puppet theater since 2008. The other performances take place on tours to individual guest performances and puppet theater festivals on four continents. So far, guest tours have led to Japan, China, Korea, Australia, Canada, the USA and European countries. Puppet shows are also performed in English and French. There are also occasional co-productions with the Meininger Theater ensemble (including “Pippi Longstocking”).

In 2011 the Meininger Puppet Theater celebrated its 25th anniversary.
