The Meir in Antwerp

The Meir is one of the major shopping streets in the Belgian city of Antwerp .

Together with De Keyserlei , Teniersplaats and Leysstraat , the Meir forms the connection between the Centraal Station and the historic city center of Antwerp.

The Meir is a continuous pedestrian street and one of the major commercial streets in Antwerp. In addition to small shops, the branches of large fashion chains line up seamlessly. Most of the shops are housed in the historic buildings that line the street. The (Royal) Paleis op de Meir and the Antwerp City Festival Hall are also located on the Meir . Both have recently been renovated and the Stadsfeestzaal has been converted into a luxury shopping center. The Wapper branches off from the Meir , with the Rubens House .

The name Meir is derived from the word meere ( sea ). The Meir used to be a so-called sea of wood . This is a place where wood intended for furniture construction is kept wet.
