Master of the merchant crucifixion

Master of the Kaufmannschen Kreuzigung: Crucifixion of Christ (detail), around 1350

A Gothic painter who painted a picture of a crucifixion around 1350 is known as the master of the merchant's crucifixion . The artist, who is not known by name, was given his emergency name after this picture, which was acquired in 1918 from the Richard von Kaufmann collection of the then Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin (now the Staatliche Museen Gemäldegalerie).

In the history of art, the origin of the master of the merchant crucifixion is controversial. The master was probably active in Bohemia, but neighboring regions in Austria were also suggested as his creative space. Maybe he was also active as a traveling artist in both regions.

The style of the master of the merchant's crucifixion was compared with that of the master of Hohenfurth of the so-called Bohemian School of Painting , but also with that of the master of the Klosterneuburg Passion Altar and its proximity to elements of Danube-Austrian illuminations. In any case, Kaufmann's crucifixion shows the adoption of elements of Trecento painting from the Italian early Renaissance, and it can also be assumed that the master himself exerted a certain influence on subsequent artists. However, the origin and regional significance of the master of the merchant crucifixion remain a question for art history.
