As a master of the back of the Verdun Altar , the unnamed Gothic called painter to 1331 images on the back of the Verdun Altar in the Austrian Klosterneuburg Abbey has created. After a fire in 1331, the four paintings were added to the 12th century enamel work of Nikolaus von Verdun when it was converted into a winged altar. These pictures are among the oldest works of panel painting in Central Europe.

Motifs and style of the panel paintings

On the back of the Verdun Altar, the crucifixion of Christ and the Easter morning are depicted, as well as the death of Mary and her heavenly coronation . The composition of the pictures is based on Byzantine painting . The first influences of the new direction of Italian painting, especially Giotto's painting style, can be seen . The elegance of the figures reveals further knowledge of French and English painting of the early 14th century.
