Master of the Crucifixion Group in the Thomée Collection in Altena

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The master of the crucifixion group in the Thomée Collection in Altena is a medieval sculptor and carver whose name is unknown. He had created one of the eight large sandstone apostle statues that used to stand in the ambulatory of the Osnabrück Cathedral . The figure attributed to him shows the same style as a crucifixion group that was recently in the collection of District Administrator Fritz Thomée (1862–1944) in Altena and gave the master his emergency name . He is regarded as an employee in the workshop of the Lower Saxon or Westphalian master from Osnabrück .

First in the history of art, all figures of the apostles and other similar works from the region were attributed to the master of Osnabrück alone. Then because of recognizable stylistic differences, the work of an assistant was seen and removed from the work of the master from Osnabrück. The separate consideration of the independent work of a master of the crucifixion group of the Thomée Collection in Altena helps to interpret and sort out the development of late medieval sculpture in the Osnabrück area.
