Master of the Anne Altar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a master of the Anne altar the low Austrian is sculptor and carver Denoted at 1511 or 1513 a Steinretabel , the so-called Annenaltar has created. The artist , not known by name, is one of the most important early Renaissance sculptors in Austria . His work stands at the transition from the late Gothic to the new art epoch of the early Renaissance and shows influences from the art of the Renaissance in northern Italy and southern Germany. Several Renaissance stone altars can be found in Vienna and the surrounding area. The Anne Altar is one of the outstanding examples of this genre in German-speaking countries. With the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529, the early phase of the Viennese Renaissance came to an end and the master of the Anna Altar did not create any further works afterwards. The Anna Altar was in the crypt of the Augustinian Church in Vienna until 1934 . Today the altar can be found in the Andreas Chapel of the Archbishop's Palace in Vienna , the residence of the Viennese bishops and archbishops. A few other works are ascribed to the master of the Anne Altar by comparing styles, for example the painted figure from Lindenhoz of St. Catherine of Alexandria in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg.
