Master of the Regulator Altar: St. Mary's Altar, left wing inside: Temple of Mary. Erfurt, 15th century

The carver and painter of the late Gothic winged altar in the former collegiate church of the Order of the Regulated Augustinian Canons ( Reglerkirche ) in Erfurt , which was made around 1465 and is still almost completely preserved today, are referred to as masters of the regulator altar . The regulator altar is one of the four large Erfurt carved altars from the 15th century (in the churches of the barefooters, preachers, regulator parish, Thomas parish), but also noted in art history because of its painted wings.

Multiple masters

It is likely that at least two or even three different artists were involved in the regulator altar, at least one painter and one sculptor. Master of the Regulator Altar is thus the common emergency name for several of these artists who are not known by name.

The painter of the regulator altar

The painter of the outside of the wings and the predella of the regulator altar, not known by name , probably came from the Middle Rhine region and worked in Erfurt from around 1445 to 1470. His '' remarkable '' contribution to the altar are images of the Passion and Mary. Further works are z. B. a Marien Altar (today Alte Pinakothek, Munich).

The sculptor of the regulator altar

The regulator altar is considered a masterpiece of late Gothic carving. The double-winged Gothic carved altar from 1498 in the Liebfrauenkirche Arnstadt is said to come from the workshop of the Erfurt regulator altar. This was originally in Arnstadt in the upper church, church of the former Franciscan monastery.

Restoration of the regulator altar

The regulator altar was extensively restored from 1970 to 1978.
