Master of the Heisterbach Altarpiece

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The master of the Heisterbach Altarpiece is a late Gothic painter who worked in Cologne around 1440 . The name of this artist, sometimes seen as a student of Stefan Lochner , is not known. It got its emergency name after its three-part altar, which it created before 1448 for the Heisterbach monastery near Bonn. After the monastery was dissolved in 1806, two painted wings were preserved; the whereabouts of the well-carved middle section is not known.

Works (selection)

  • The preserved parts of the Heisterbach Altar show scenes from the life of Jesus on the inside and saints like St. Ursula or St. Gereon when closed. Today they are kept in Cologne in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum , in Munich in the Alte Pinakothek and several other museums in Germany.
  • The painting Crucifixion of the Master of the Altar von Heisterbach is in private ownership.

Art historical importance

The master of the Altar by Heisterbach is not counted among the leading exponents of the Cologne School because of his interpretation of the Soft Style and is probably somewhat inferior to other masters in the artistry of his execution; Nevertheless, viewing and analyzing his pictures can provide an insight into the development of painting in Cologne before Stefan Lochner . To see the Heisterbach Altar as a possible early work by Lochner itself remains very controversial.
