Master of the Black Book of Hours

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The illuminator who is unknown by name and who painted the so-called Black Book of Hours is called the master of the Black Book of Hours . The work takes its name from its blackened pages, which were created in an elaborate and unusual manner and which the painter painted with 14 full-page miniatures, 15 larger and several small initials and 138 borders. The work was created around 1475 in Bruges in the vicinity of the illuminator Willem Vrelant . It was probably created for a member of the court of Burgundy.
