Master of Farneto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Master of Farneto ( it. Maestro del Farneto) a painter is known that in the late 13th century in Italy Umbria worked. The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after his panel painting of a Madonna and Child , surrounded by scenes of the Passion of Christ . It comes from the Farneto Monastery near Perugia and was created around 1290.

The work of the master of Farneto was one of the earliest works by important Umbrian painters. Painting in this region received decisive impulses in the middle of the 13th century when Roman painters were involved in the painting of the churches in Assisi . In the case of the Franciscan Master, who painted the lower church there, there is a blue-gold contrast and echoes of Giotto can be seen. In the paintings of the master of Farneto, on the other hand, green-red predominates and he is even more influenced by Giotto. He leans more towards the painters of the upper church of Assisi. There is a strong echo of Cimabue in his work .

The altarpiece by the Master of Farneto is now on display in the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria. This museum is located in Perugia in the Palazzo dei Priori. Frescoes in the Sala dei Notari in this building may also have been made by the master of Farneto. A copy of the altarpiece can now be found in the Farneto Monastery.
