Meitar (IDF)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Meitar (Hebrew מיתר) / Moran is an elite unit of the Israeli armed forces for special operations with guided weapons. It belongs to the artillery of the Israeli land forces and is a Sayeret unit (Hebrew: סיירת, pl .: sayarot), a reconnaissance unit (sometimes referred to as a special unit).

Little is known about the Meitar. In 2011, information was released about their main weapon system, the Tamuz guided missile . This weapon was used exclusively by the Meitar.

The Tamuz is often used by a Meitar squadron on a mobile launcher. Such a mobile unit consists of a four-man team : an APC commander ; a driver and two navigators . Training on the system lasts almost twelve months, which includes an 85 km march to test the artillerymen's physical condition and navigational skills.
