Melinopterus prodromus syn. Aphodius (Melinopterus) prodromus , as Hellrandiger dung beetles called, is a beetle from the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae).

Characteristics of the beetle

The elongated oval and very flattened beetles have a body length of 4–7 mm. The head, pronotum and scutellum are black. The pronotum has a yellow-brown border on the front and sides. The wing covers are colored yellow-brown and have a variable pattern.

Similar species

• Melinopterus sphacelatus - a very similar species with a vertex over its pronotum . In addition, the eighth row of points on the wing covers is shortened.

distribution

The species occurs in the Palearctic (Europe, North Africa, Middle East, North and Central Asia). In the north they occur up to the 64th parallel. The species was introduced in North America.

Way of life

The beetles overwinter and fly from February to June. The next generation flies in autumn from September to November. The beetles and larvae feed mainly on manure , especially horse droppings, and less often on rotting plant parts such as compost or rotting fruit.
