Robert Klymasz

Robert Bogdan Klymasz (born May 14, 1936 in Toronto ) is a Canadian ethnologist and folk song researcher of Ukrainian origin.

Klymasz studied Russian at the University of Toronto (Bachelor 1957) and Slavic Studies at the University of Manitoba (Master 1960). He received his doctorate in 1971 from Indiana University . As a specialist in Ukrainian folk tradition, he was director, later senior coordinator, of the Slavic and Eastern European program of the Canadian Center for Folk Culture Studies at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa from 1967 to 1976 , where he organized several exhibitions and directed documentaries.

From 1976 to 1978 he was director of the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Center in Winnipeg and has taught at Harvard University , the University of Manitoba , the University of Ottawa , the University of California at Los Angeles , the University of Alberta and the Memorial University of Newfoundland . In 1984 he returned to the Canadian Museum of Civilization as curator of the Eastern Europe Program . After his retirement in 2000 he was appointed Curator Emeritus of the Canadian Museum of Civilization and in 2006 he was appointed Zurawecki Research Scholar at the Center for Ukrainian Canadian Studies at the University of Manitoba.

Klymasz has published articles in such journals as Canadian Folklore Canadien , Canadian Folk Music Journal , Ethnomusicology , Folklore and Folk Music Archivist , Journal of the Folklore Institute, and Encyclopedia of Music in Canada . Between 2005 and 2009 he completed several research projects in the archives of the University of Manitoba. He is one of the co-founders of the Folklore Studies Association of Canada , which awarded him the Marius Barbeau Medal in 2000 .
