Mellow Candle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mellow Candle were an Irish folk rock band .

In 1972, the Deram label - a sub-label of Decca - released their only album at the time called Swaddling Songs (Deram SDL 7). The cover of the LP came from David W. Anstey . The music ranges from slow folk songs to rocking pieces.

history

The band originated in 1963 when students Clodagh Simonds and Alison O'Donnell founded the group The Gatecrashers at their school in Dublin ; a little later they changed the name to Mellow Candle . With perseverance, it was possible that a first single was released in August 1968; it contained the title Feeling high and Tea With the Sun . The great success did not materialize, however. In 1970 Alison O'Donnell met her future husband, the South African guitarist David Williams , who was studying in Ireland at the time. He joined the group. A little later bassist Pat Morris joined them. 1971 spent the band with various appearances in clubs and at festivals. They became aware of a Decca talent scout and invited the group to an audition in London . The audition was successful and a recording deal was signed in April 1971. Even before the recordings for the first and - as it turned out - only album began, there were two changes in the line-up of the group. Pat Morris was replaced by Frank Boylan and the Glasgow native William Murray joined the band as drummer.

Work on the album began in December 1971 in the Decca recording studios in London. In April 1972 first the single Silver Song / Dan the Wing was released , then the album Swaddling Songs . Despite good reviews, neither the single nor the album were commercially successful. A few more appearances followed, but in 1973 the group separated for good.

The LP and the two singles are among the most sought-after rarities in the folk rock field today. In the meantime there have been several reprints on CD or LP.

Later two CDs with previously unreleased archive recordings were released, namely The Virgin Prophet (also as LP) and My Lagan Love .

Flibbertigibbet

Alison and David Williams later emigrated to South Africa. With Jo Dudding and Barrie Glenn they released the folk-rock LP Whistling Jigs to the Moon under the name Flibbertigibbet in 1978 (on Stanyan 7002 ).
