It is located about 5 km north of Grundarfjörður at the entrance to the fjord of the same name. Because of the abundant bird life, this island has been a nature reserve since 1972 and cannot be entered without a permit. Protection also means that shooting is not permitted within a 2 km radius. The name means arctic fox island.
