The Memoriale della Shoah is a memorial for the Jewish victims of National Socialism in Milan and is located in the Milano Centrale train station .

Dedication, opening

The memorial is dedicated to those women, men and children of Jewish origin who were deported from the San Vittore prison in Milan via the Milano Centrale train station to the concentration and extermination camps in the east. The memorial extends over 7,060 m², mostly at ground level (under the platforms of the station), and was built by the Fondazione Memoriale della Shoah di Milano under the direction of Ferruccio de Bortoli in the central station of Milan. Part of the memorial is the underground platform 21, from which the deportations to the Fossoli and Bozen transit camps as well as to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp took place. This platform was originally used as a mail loading station. Here the deportations could be carried out without public attention. On January 30, 1944, the first mass transport to Auschwitz took place with 605 Jewish women, men and children. Only 22 of them could survive. Part of the exhibition is an original cattle wagon that was used for the deportation. Some of the deportees also ended up in the concentration camps in Bergen-Belsen , Flossenbürg , Mauthausen and Ravensbrück .

The Memoriale della Shoah opened on January 27, 2013. It has been open to the public on a daily basis since January 26, 2014.
