Menhir of Karlsburg
The Karlsburg menhir is a monolith in the municipality of Karlsburg (Vorpommern) in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district .
geography
The menhir is located in the Karlsburg palace park on the eastern edge of the park approx. 20 m next to the B 109 .
history
So far, the stone has no prehistoric reference, at least not at its current location. It was probably erected here as a find from the manor's lands around 1848 when the landscape park was designed. The stone probably comes from the lands around Steinfurth , because there are tons of field stones that have been piled up to form stone bars. Not far from these facilities, during the construction of the OPAL route in 2009, an extensive Neolithic urn grave field with 40 almost completely preserved urns was found, which, however, were also overlaid by finds from the Imperial and Wendish periods. The menhir could come from this cult site .
Material and dimensions
The monolith is made of gray granite. It is 2 meters high and has an irregular cross-section and is around 60 to 70 centimeters thick. It is wedged with field stones, but these were probably later reinforced with concrete. The concrete ring has probably been blown up by frost, the stone is beginning to sink.
