The Menlo Avenue - West Twenty-ninth Street Historic District is a conservation area in the district of North University Park of Los Angeles , which to the municipality West Adams heard. The area is made up of a number of late Victorian and American Arts and Crafts-style homes that date back to 1896. It is bounded by West Adams Boulevard to the north, Ellendale Street to the east, West Thirtieth Street to the south and Vermont Avenue to the west. The listed district is worth mentioning because of its well-preserved buildings from the architectural period that illustrates the transition from late Victorianism to the style of the arts and crafts movement that began in southern California at the beginning of the 20th century. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District on February 12, 1987 .

Individual objects of the ensemble

There are more than fifty historic buildings within the Menlo Avenue-West Twenty-ninth Street Historic District that represent a cross-section of architectural styles from the beginning of the 20th century. The district's outstanding homes include:

  • 2630 South Menlo Avenue - this two-and-a-half-story Craftsman style house was built around 1899 and is eye-catching with its asymmetrical facade and normal sloping gable roof . The house was changed because part of the veranda was closed and is used as a guest house.
  • 2631 South Menlo Avenue - two and a half story house built circa 1903 and completed circa 1903. It was built on a square plan and has Tudor-style decorations. The exterior walls are made of hewn natural stone on the ground floor and clapboard on the upper floor. By using the stone plinth and Tudor elements, the house contributes to the diversity of the buildings in the listed district.
  • 2643 South Menlo Avenue - two-and-a-half story house, 390 square meters, built in 1903 by the architectural firm of Sumner Hunt and Wesley Eager. It's square and influenced by neoclassicism . The steep, trimmed roof is closed at the top by a balustrade with twisted columns.

  • 2646 South Menlo Avenue - The two-story house, which has been described as eclectic in design , has an irregular floor plan and was built by William F. West around 1897.
  • 2663 South Menlo Avenue - the two and a half story house is an example of the influences of the Tudor style on the transition to the Craftsman style and was built around 1896. It has a largely symmetrical facade with a steeply erect gable roof and beveled bay windows. The house was rebuilt in 1920. For the conversion into an apartment building, the outer ends of the veranda were closed, four additional verandas were added at the rear and the inside of the building was significantly changed.
  • 2666 South Menlo Avenue - this two-and-a-half-story house with an irregular appearance was built around 1897 and combines influences from the Craftsman, Queen Anne (clapboard) and Richardson neo-Romanesque style .
  • 2679 South Menlo Avenue - two-story house built around 1901 with 308 m² of living space and an almost square floor plan. The original owner was Florence Scarborough , who studied music in Italy and was the musical director of B'nai B'rith Temple at the intersection of Ninth Street and Hope Street. Her husband, James Scarborough , has served as a lawyer and advisor to a variety of Los Angeles companies.
  • 2706 South Menlo Avenue - This two and a half story house was built in 1904 in the Craftsman style and has elements of alpine chalets.

  • 2712 South Menlo Avenue - the two-story house, built around 1897, has an asymmetrical facade and was influenced by neoclassicism . The towering gable roof is beveled at the ends. The porch at the front of the house has been converted into a closed shape.
  • 2723 South Menlo Avenue - The two-story house, built around 1897, is believed to be the oldest building on Menlo Avenue. It is an unchanged building in the Victorian style with Italian influences. From 1902 it was used as a guest house.
  • 2801 South Menlo Avenue - the two-story house was built before 1901 and has a steep gable roof and a full-length porch with round pillars.
  • 2803 South Menlo Avenue - the two-story house with a pyramid roof was built around 1897 and has an interior veranda embedded between two columns and a two-story sloping bay window.
  • 2811-2813 South Menlo Avenue - two story house built in 1898 with clapboard exterior walls on the first and second floors. The floor plan of the house is irregular. The house has two Dutch style gable roofs protruding from the main facade and a flattened pyramidal roof. The house was converted into a semi-detached house in 1912.
  • 2824 South Menlo Avenue - two-story clapboard house built prior to 1901.
  • 2827 South Menlo Avenue - Built in 1898, this home is a fine example of clapboard buildings. It's actually almost square and its prominent features are the steep traufständige gabled main front and eye-catching gable wall above the front porch. On the left side of the house there is a curved window front on the ground floor with a balcony.
  • 2833 South Menlo Avenue - a two-story house built around 1899 with an asymmetrical facade and a pitched roof as well as a detached veranda with an ornamental gable and classic columns.
  • 2615 Ellendale Place - the two-story building based on the Spanish colonial style was built around 1908. It is on the corner of Ellendale Place and West Adams Boulevard. It later became a home for the Alpha Gamma Omega fraternity at the University of Southern California .
