  • The Merjanische belongs to the Ugric Finno-languages , the assignment within this language group is not assured. Speaking, it was in the region of Moscow , whose Russian name Moskwa is probably merjanischen origin. The Merja are last mentioned in the Nestor Chronicle , in which they are counted among the Finno-Ugric peoples. Further traditions are sparse and do not allow any precise conclusions to be drawn about the position of Merjan within the Finno-Ugric language family. Linguistic research has so far been based on the numerous preserved toponyms and hydronyms of Merjan origin. From this it is possible to draw conclusions about a close relationship to Mari , but this cannot be regarded as scientifically proven. Merjan is considered to be extinct by the 14th century at the latest with the complete assimilation of the Merja by Slavs .
