The Merrill Hassenfeld Amphitheater in the southern part of the Sultan Basin is an open-air venue in the Gehinnom Valley , Jerusalem .
The venue was built in 1981 and had a capacity of around 6,000 seats for concerts and other events. After an extensive renovation in 1988, the audience capacity of the open-air arena was expanded to 10,000 seats. The first concert by an international musician was given by the British Eric Clapton on July 13, 1989 during his Journeyman World Tour . After the Clapton concert in 1989, international artists such as BB King , Dizzy Gillespie and Dire Straits later performed in the amphitheater. Parts of the complex have also been used as a museum since 2010 . Since 2015 the "Jerusalem Opera Festival" has also taken place annually in June.
