history

The Mersen Group, which operated under the name “Carbone Lorraine” until May 20, 2010, emerged from the Compagnie lorraine de charbons pour l'électricité, a company founded in Pagny-sur-Moselle ( Lorraine / France) in 1891 , where the Group still operates a plant today. In 1937, this Lorraine company merged with Le Carbone in the greater Paris area ( Gennevilliers / Hauts-de-Seine), where the group still owns and operates the original plant today.

La Compagnie lorraine de charbons pour l'électricité was founded in 1891 in the French department of Meurthe-et-Moselle. The company initially manufactured electric motors , dynamos and lighting there before switching to the production of "carbon filaments" for electrical lighting. At the same time, Le Carbone, founded in the Paris region in 1892, manufactured brushes for electric motors. In 1893, Charles Street, an engineer at Le Carbone, discovered the graphitization of carbon with which synthetic graphite could be produced. He patented his process under the title: "System for a direct current furnace ( Système de four électrique continu )".

In the 1980s, the Pechiney Group acquired a majority stake (61%) in Carbone Lorraine and embarked on a strategy of external growth and diversification. The company expanded beyond the most important production of graphite brushes at that time and began manufacturing brake discs from carbon / carbon fiber composites.

Pechiney also acquired a number of competitors such as Ferraz, one of the largest manufacturers of fuses and electrical protection systems. The group then took control of Stackpole and with this step became one of the world's leading providers of graphite production.

In 1995 Pechiney sold 21% of its shares in Paribas Affaires Industrielles (PAI). In the years that followed, Carbone Lorraine expanded its position through acquisitions in Europe and the USA. Particularly noteworthy is the takeover of the Gould-Shawmut Electrical Protection Division in 1999, with which the group advanced to a leading position in power semiconductor protection. In 2005, Paribas sold its Carbone Lorraine shares through the market.

In May 2010, the Annual General Meeting approved the group's name change proposed by management. Carbone Lorraine changes its corporate identity and became MERSEN. This name is the one a tribute to Marin Mersenne, mathematician and philosopher of the 17th century, on the other hand stands for M aterial, E lectrical, R esearch, S ustainable, E nergy (material, electrical, research, sustainability, energy ).
