A knife messenger is a historical job title in the Trattenbacher Tal near Ternberg in Upper Austria . Since the 16th century, folding knives , known as pocket knives , have been made here in various workshops with the help of the water power of the Trattenbach .

Knife messengers had the task of maintaining communication between the individual workshops of the "Feitelmacher" and the cooperative . The knife messenger distributed the incoming work orders from the cooperative to the individual master craftsmen in the valley. At the same time, they accepted material orders from the individual workshops and passed them on to the cooperative, which then processed the orders collectively. The function of the knife messenger was carried out by trustworthy and respected personalities in the village community . After the death of a knife messenger, his widow Anna sometimes took on the important task - as in the case of the long-time messenger Karl Stübinger - if she had the confidence of the Feitelmacher.

Until 1930 the knife messengers personally delivered all business communications within the valley. In addition to business news, they also conveyed personal messages across the valley. After the comprehensive connection of the valley to the telephone network , personal messages became more and more superfluous.
