The Metten Fleischwaren GmbH & Co. KG is a medium sausage manufacturer based in Finnentrop in the Sauerland (Nordrhein-Westfalen). In addition to Metten Fleischwaren GmbH & Co. KG, the Metten Group also includes Biggetaler Fleischwaren GmbH.

history

The family business was founded in 1902 as a butcher's shop by Wilhelm Metten senior. founded in Finnentrop and is now run by Tobias Metten in the fourth generation together with his father Ulrich Metten.

Wilhelm Metten jun. took over the butcher's shop from his father in 1933 and began to expand the small butcher's shop into an industrial company. At that time, the Metten company was particularly well-known for its bone ham, which matured in a rock tunnel originally built for air raid protection purposes and took on a very special aroma. During the Second World War it was discovered that the rock tunnels behind the production building, which were blown up for air raid purposes, were ideal for storing ham, bacon and raw sausage. Due to the constant mountain temperature between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius, the goods even got a special aroma. The salt factory was moved to the mountain, where it has proven itself for 70 years. Until 2003, pigs were slaughtered in one of Europe's most modern slaughterhouses.

In the 1960s, Peter and Ulrich Metten, the third generation, joined the company. In 1990 Metten received approval as a European processing company for meat products (DE EV 356 EG) and started the first construction stage of the plant in the Frielentrop industrial area with meat cutting, raw sausage production and deep-freeze storage.

In 2008 the facilities were expanded and modernized, followed by relocation of production to the factory in Finnentrop- Frielentrop . Meat and sausage products are produced on 30,000 m². One focus of the investments was the renewal of the machine park, whereby about 30 percent less water and energy should be used. A combined heat and power plant was built in 2014.

The company has been running a factory outlet with lunch and a snack bar since 2011. In addition to the original products, B-goods items with small defects and special items are also offered.

Product range

Metten Fleischwaren has a range of over 100 products from the areas of aspic, raw sausage, roast and ham, boiled sausage and canned goods. The products are sold through food retailers, meat wholesalers and discount stores. The share of self-service products in total sales is around 75% (including canned food). 25% of the products are sold over the service counter. Export accounts for around 10% of sales.

"Big Sauerland" sausage 5x80g can

The company's best-known product is the "Big Sauerlander" sausage, which has been hand-made for over 50 years, Germany's most popular canned sausage (source: IRI, LEH Total> = 200sqm, sausages in glass and can (not refrigerated), sales in t, MAT Apr 2019 ). Over 10 million cans of "Big Sauerland" sausage with five 80 g sausages leave the factory in Finnentrop every year. Since 2015 the Metten Rostbratwurst has also been marketed under the umbrella brand “Dicke Sauerländer”. In addition, the Metten Group produces numerous refrigerated self-service items as own brands for the food retail sector.

Federal Cartel Office fine

In July 2014, the Federal Cartel Office imposed a high six-figure fine on Metten for illegal price fixing (so-called sausage cartel). According to the Federal Cartel Office, numerous statements and documents show that there was a traditional “basic understanding” of regular agreement on demands for price increases. Concrete agreements were made between various sausage manufacturers to jointly enforce price increases for retailers. Most of the arrangements were made by telephone, be it through reciprocal calls or organized broadcasts. Due to the heterogeneity of the products (different types of sausage, different pack sizes, etc.), it was not possible to set specific individual prices so that price ranges for product groups (raw, scalded, cooked sausage and ham) were agreed. As a result, higher price demands could be enforced against the retail trade on the basis of the cartel agreement.
