Michael Badura

Michael Badura (born April 4, 1938 in Opole , Upper Silesia) is a German artist and professor emeritus. He lives near Wuppertal - Beyenburg .

Life

Michael Badura studied art and industrial design with Georg Muche and Gerhard Kadow from 1955 to 1961 at the textile engineering school (master class) and at the Werkkunstschule Krefeld. From 1960 he works as a painter and designer. From 1961 to 1962 Badura had a teaching position for painting and textile design at the Werkkunstschule in Kassel. From 1963 to 1972 he worked as a scientific draftsman in the zoological and botanical institutes at the Georg-August University in Göttingen .

In 1967, together with Dietmar Becker and Christel Eulberg, he brought out the Bric-A-Brac newspaper, “Newspaper for Literature and Art”, of which three issues appeared (May, June and July 1967). In 1970 Michael Badura co-authored and planned the exhibition with Reinhard Rock and Udo Breger: “Concepts of a New Art” in the Göttingen Municipal Museum. In the same year he was co-author with Lucy Hillebrand of the first congress for monument protection in Germany. In 1979 he was visiting professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt . From 1979 to 2004 Badura was Professor of Painting and Basics of Design at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal .

Badura dealt with ecological issues as early as the 1960s and, according to his own statement, is the first artist to visualize ecological issues in practice and problematize them theoretically. Michael Badura linked and expanded the term ecology with characteristics and phenomena critical of civilization and perception and began in 1964 with the project “Awakened World” with ecological research and long-term processes. In 1977 he was a participant in Documenta 6 .
