Michael Jopling, Baron Jopling

Thomas Michael Jopling, Baron Jopling , PC (born December 10, 1930 ) is a British politician and a member of the House of Lords .

Jopling went to Cheltenham College and graduated from Durham University . He was a farmer and entrepreneur and worked for the National Farmers Union . He was a member of the regional assembly of the Thirsk Rural District .

Jopling was elected to the House of Commons in 1964 for the Conservatives in Westmorland constituency. From 1979 to 1983 he was Parliamentary State Secretary of the Treasury.

After redesigning the constituencies, he was a Member of Parliament for the constituency of Westmorland and Lonsdale from 1983 and was Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from 1983 to 1987.

In 1997 he left the House of Commons, was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Jopling , of Ainderby Quernhow in the County of North Yorkshire, and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since. He is a member of the Privy Council and the America All Party Parliamentary Group .
