Michael Köhl (physicist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Köhl (* 1975 ) is a German physicist who deals with experimental quantum optics.

From 1995, Köhl studied physics at the University of Heidelberg (as a scholarship holder of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes), in 1998/99 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Wolfgang Ketterle and at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main , where he completed his diploma thesis at MIT in 1999 Diploma received. He then went to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the MPI in Garching, where he received his doctorate under Theodor Hänsch in 2001. As a post-doctoral student he was with Tilman Esslinger at the ETH Zurich . From 2007 he was a reader at Cambridge University , where he became a Fellow of Trinity College and Professor in 2011. In 2013 he received a Humboldt Professorship at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

In experimental quantum optics and atomic physics, he deals with ultracold quantum gases and specifically investigated Fermigases in optical lattices as models for solid state phenomena.

In 2007 he received the Röntgen Prize from the University of Giessen, in 2012 a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, in 2012 the Thomson Medal, in 2009 an ERC Starting Grant and in 2014 an ERC Consolidator Grant.
