Michael Marcovici

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Marcovici (born September 27, 1969 in Vienna ) is an Austrian artist and entrepreneur. His works deal with economics, technology, domains , sociology and politics. Marcovici took up his first entrepreneurial activities while still at school - for legal reasons, his parents had to declare him of legal age. Until his first major economic success, he mainly worked as a magazine publisher. He is also the founder of the Austria Börsenbrief .

Largest eBay dealer in Europe

In 2001 Marcovici sold a few devices on eBay . Amazed by the high prices that the auctions achieved, he soon began to sell goods commercially under the name “Qentis Holding GmbH”. The other projects were put on hold and the first employees were hired. Within only 4 years the company grew to 60 employees - at the end of the day it mainly sold goods from China that were manufactured on an OEM basis. The range of goods also included complex products such as dental chairs, forklifts and all-terrain buggies - all sent by mail order to customers throughout Europe. After more than 500,000 products sold on eBay and an annual turnover of 30 million euros, the company suddenly had to file for bankruptcy in early 2006. The news of the bankruptcy of the then largest eBay dealer in Europe acknowledged the eBay share price with a loss of 4%. In his book, published shortly thereafter, Marcovici primarily blamed financiers and the eBay system - which is not suitable for such a large company - but also admitted that the company was growing too quickly. During the subsequent settlement of his personal bankruptcy - Marcovici was also liable with his own assets - he gave lectures on trading on eBay and also translated his book into English. In addition, he began to realize his long-planned art projects.

Installation "One Billion Dollar"

Marcovici's art object most discussed in the media is the installation “One Billion Dollar”. It involves several pallets of money on a miniature scale of 1: 6, which - as the name suggests - is supposed to represent the amount of one billion dollars. The original plan to issue real money failed because of the exorbitantly high interest rates for making the money available, as well as because of the security requirements required by the potential financiers.

A project by Marcovicis, which was published at the beginning of the financial crisis in 2008, is "Rattraders". He presented laboratory rats in a special cage, which he said had been trained to trade in real time on the financial markets. Although Marcovici described the project as a clearly profit-oriented business idea, the impression remained that it was more of a cynical art drive with subtle criticism of the financial system. Marcovici did not want to give a clear statement about the true motivation of his work in a newspaper interview.

Domains

Marcovici has been in the domain business since 2002 . In 2009 he merged his portfolio with other domain owners to form the “Domain Developers Fund”. Marcovici is the founder and director of the fund, which invests exclusively in domains. The fund registers and buys domains, these are either parked or developed into websites or sold again with a corresponding premium. The fund was registered as an open fund in the Cayman Islands on March 10, 2010 and has been available from banks and brokers since August 2010. Before that, the fund was managed as a “managed account” and from March 10, 2009 to March 10, 2010 achieved a performance of 155%. In addition to Marcovici, the fund is run by Alberto Sanzde Lama as co-director. Marco Rodzinek, Philipp Schindler and Stefan Piech are also on the fund's advisory board. In addition to his work for the Domain Developers Fund, Marcovici is also the operator of the "Domainsindex", a price index for domains similar to the Dow Jones Index for stocks. Another project is the "Marshall Index", a project to measure the popularity of words on the Internet, which is used by website operators to measure the popularity of certain words.
