Michael Schmieder (* 1955 in Lauf in the Black Forest ) is a dementia expert , nurse, ethicist and author. He lives and works in Wetzikon near Zurich (Switzerland).

Sonnweid

In 1985, the Lucerne renovator and investor René Boucard took over Sonnweid , which at the time was a “home for women in need”. He hired the nurse Michael Schmieder as the nursing manager. Schmieder specialized the home in the care and care of people with dementia. At that time there were neither comparable institutions nor practical knowledge for the care of people with dementia. Schmieder realized that the focus is not on illness, but on people and their individual needs. Gradually, he enlarged the Sonnweid, now 167 people with dementia live there. The Sonnweid is considered a pioneer company and is one of the world's leading institutions in its field today. In 1986 the first residential group for people with dementia was created. In 1998 the oasis was opened for people with severe dementia. With the day / night station (flexible stays from one day to one month), Sonnweid takes the strain off family carers at home. Four new buildings have been built since 1994 that are adapted to the needs of people with dementia.

In 2014, Schmieder and Uschi Entenmann published the book "Dement, aber nicht stubborn" at Ulstein Verlag.

At the end of 2015, Schmieder gave up the operational management of Sonnweid and moved to its board of directors. He gives lectures and presentations on dementia. He is the editor of the specialist magazine Das Heft and the internet platform alzheimer.ch , which conveys, informs and networks knowledge. Those affected, relatives and people who come into contact with people with dementia can find help on the website. The platform is financed by the Sonnweid Foundation, the Walder Foundation and private donors.

On November 6, 2017, Michael Schmieder was honored by the Paradies Foundation for his life's work. The Alzheimer's Association of the Canton of Zurich awarded Michael Schmieder the 2018 Focus Prize on September 21, 2018.

Sonnweid Foundation

In addition to Sonnweid AG, the Sonnweid Foundation was established in 1998 . It offers financial help to people with dementia who cannot pay for a home stay from their own or state funds. The foundation is now also involved in other areas such as the promotion of new forms of care, training of volunteers and the periodic award of the “The Second Reality” prize. It improves the living conditions of people with dementia in the inpatient area and supports the public discourse on the subject of dementia, among other things with the platforms alzheimer.ch and ungekuenstelt.ch .
