Dieter Schmidt (born August 28, 1938 ) is a former German football player who was active between 1961 and 1963 for SC Dynamo Berlin in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

In the football season 1959 (calendar season) Dieter Schmidt made his debut in high-class football at the age of 20. In the second-rate first GDR league , he played 25 of the 26 league games for the newly promoted Dynamo Dresden and scored three goals. Also in 1960 he was part of the player base, only missed two point games and increased his goal rate to eight goals. At the beginning of 1961, GDR football was switched back to the summer-spring game rhythm, so that 39 games had to be played in the GDR league between February 1961 and June 1962. Schmidt had switched to the top division SC Dynamo Berlin at the beginning of the season. Without adjustment difficulties he established himself in the league environment, because as a right winger he was used in 32 point games and scored six goals. As a half-right striker, Schmidt was also in the final of the GDR soccer cup , which the East Berliners lost 3-1 to SC Chemie Halle . Although Dieter Schmidt was also intended for the regular team for the 1962/63 season, he was only used in five league games at irregular intervals in this season, with 26 league games again. On the 16th day he was called up for the last time in the league. He returned to Dynamo Dresden for one season in 1963/64. The Dresdner played after a year in the league again in the GDR league. In the successful resurgence, however, Schmidt was only involved with six league appearances, and for the first time in four years he failed to score in league and league games. This ended his career as a football player in GDR-wide gaming operations for the time being.

In 1966 Dieter Schmidt became a player coach at the company sports association (BSG) Stahl Maxhütte in Unterwellenborn in Thuringia . There was initially a player and coach in the third-class district league Gera . In 1970 the steelworkers became district champions for the first time and took part in the promotion round to the GDR league, where they failed in fourth place. In 1972 the championship was reached again and this time the promotion games were successfully mastered. Still as a player-coach, Schmidt led the steel team through the GDR league season 1972/73, where he himself participated as a player in 21 of the 22 league games. After the newcomer BSG Stahl had managed to stay in the league, he started his second season in the GDR league in 1973/74. Player-coach Schmidt was also a regular in his team at the age of 35 and played in another 19 league games. This time he and his team couldn't stay up, which meant that higher-class football was finally over for Dieter Schmidt. As a player, he had completed 37 league games with seven goals and 95 GDR league games with eleven goals.
