Michelham Priory is the site of an earlier Augustinian priory near Upper Dicker , East Sussex in England , United Kingdom . It is owned by the Sussex Archaeological Society .

history

The Augustine Priory of the Holt Trinity in Michelham was founded in 1229. The priory was dissolved by Henry VII in 1537 . The church and some of the buildings were demolished and between 1599 and 1601 the house was sold to Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset . Around three hundred years later, in 1896, James Gwynne bought it and raised his children Rupert , Roland and Violet here . The property remained privately owned until the 20th century when architect and antiquarian Walter Godfrey renovated it. During the winter of 1941–42, it was used as a base by Canadian forces as they prepared for Operation Jubilee . It later housed the headquarters of the Auxiliary Territorial Service for East Sussex.

The property was purchased in 1958 by Mrs. RH Hotblack who acquired it for the purpose of preservation for posterity. Due to a donation from Kenneth James William Mackay, 3rd Earl of Inchcape in memory of his friend John Fletcher Boughey, who was killed in World War II , Hotblack signed the property on November 1, 1959 to the Sussex Archaeological Society as trustee.
