The surgical microscope , as it was known from other specialist areas, has been used in dentistry since the late 1980s . It has been modified and further developed over time for the special requirements of dentistry.

Mention should be made of Syngcuk Kim (USA) and Richard A. Rubinstein (USA) as pioneers in the treatment with the dental microscope, who performed the first root tip resections under the dental microscope. Other pioneers are Clifford Ruddle (USA), Dennis Shanelec (USA) and Glenn van Ass (Canada).

The dental microscope is increasingly used in endodontics ( root canal treatment ) in the dental practice .

In Germany, with the amendment to the private fee schedule for dentists (GOZ), a billing code has been introduced since January 2012 that allows the costly use of a dental microscope to be billed. Whether this fee does justice to the acquisition costs and the workload is controversial in the dental profession.

Since 2009 the German Society for Microscopic Dentistry eV (DGmikro) has been promoting the establishment of the dental microscope in dentistry.
