Microsoft Deployment Toolkit

The Microsoft Deployment Toolkit ( MDT for short , formerly Business Desktop Deployment ) is software from Microsoft that supports administrators in the automated distribution of operating systems on server and client computers. It was developed for the fast rollout of software on computers in a Windows network, has a graphical user interface and is made available free of charge by Microsoft. Hotfixes, applications, drivers and system settings that are not covered by the group policy can be integrated into the generated image.

Windows version supported

Windows 7 , Windows 8 , Windows 8.1 , Windows 10 , Windows Server 2008 R2 , Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 are supported by MDT 2013.

MDT 2012 with Update 1 supports Windows XP , Windows Vista , Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2003 , Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Hardware drivers , Windows updates and software can be integrated into the installation.

MDT 2010 Update 1 requires the Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK) for Windows 7. Both tools can be downloaded for free from Microsoft's website. MDT 2010 Update 1 enables Lite-Touch installations to be performed and provides built-in templates for update, replacement, upgrade and bare metal installations.
