history

Version 1.0 was released on September 6, 2007 and was the counterpart to the outdated Windows Media Encoder . A beta version of Expression Encoder 2.0 was released in March 2008, which included a new VC-1 codec and improved Silverlight support. To make Expression Encoder 2 available for Silverlight 2 applications, a first service pack with support for H.264 / AAC videos was released. With the software development kit for Expression Encoder 2, IntelliSense for Expression Encoder 2, SDK documentation including API reference and code examples were made available. In the second half of 2009, Expression Encoder 3 was available in German as part of Expression Studio 3.

The free version of Expression Encoder 4 was released as a download from Microsoft on July 19, 2010, but it does not support H.264 encoding. Expression Encoder 4 Pro implemented Live IIS Smooth Streaming and, from Service Pack 1, the HE-AAC Audio Codec, and the computing power for coding was also distributed to the graphics processor. With Service Pack 2 for Expression Encoder 4, encoding in the outdated SRS audio format for Silverlight and processing of 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound audio files became possible. Expression Encoder 4 Pro has not been sold by Microsoft since the end of 2014. The free version is still available for download, but is no longer being developed.
