NetMeeting

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NetMeeting was software from Microsoft for IP telephony ( Voice over IP ), multipoint video conferencing , chat and data transfer based on the H.323 protocol. You can also use Microsoft programs (Word, Paint, etc.) in collaboration. An essential part of NetMeeting is the functionality of an interactive whiteboard . It is also possible to redirect input and output from one computer to another. So you can connect to another PC over the network; the own keyboard and mouse controls the PC in the network, the own monitor shows the output of the PC in the network.

It is included in the installation package of Internet Explorer 5 and in the Windows 2000 standard installation and can be used from Internet Explorer 4+. In Microsoft Windows XP it has been replaced by MSN Messenger , but is installed by default under "% programfiles% \ Netmeeting \ conf.exe" . NetMeeting is no longer included in Microsoft Windows Vista , but can be installed later on the 32-bit versions.

The program is no longer being developed by Microsoft. With the successor product Office Communications Server , Microsoft changed the signaling protocol from H.323 to SIP ; it is currently being sold under the name Skype for Business .

In cooperation with routers and firewalls there are connection problems with NetMeeting, since a directly accessible IP address is required. The forwarding of the TCP port 1503 to the computer behind the router allows the use of the basic functions, voice / video communication also requires the forwarding of the TCP port 1720.
