Interfaces and protocols

Skype for Business collects presence information about the company's employees, i.e. it creates attendance lists and logs communication between employees and during video conferences.

Server technology enables computers to be maintained from a remote computer. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is used for Internet telephony and the SIMPLE standard is used as a supplement for instant messaging and presence information . The system transfers files using the RTP and SRTP protocols, and online conferences using the Persistent Shared Object Model (PSOM). The Lync client uses HTTPS to connect to the Web Components Server to download address books and expand distribution lists. The combinations supported as standard include encrypted communication with SIP via TLS and SRTP and unencrypted SIP via TCP and RTP. The Lync Server technology also offers connection to chat services from other manufacturers such as AOL Instant Messenger , Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk .

The current server variant is Skype for Business Server 2015. Skype for Business is included as a client in Office 2016 and Office 365 .

Client platforms

Skype for Business is offered for Windows and macOS . There are also apps for Android , iOS , and Windows Phone . The open SIP protocol makes it possible to connect to Microsoft Lync Server with other clients, such as the Microsoft Communicator on Nokia smartphones (Symbian 3 since Anna update). An app for Windows 8 and Windows 10 is also available in the Windows Store .
