Microsoft Refurbisher Program

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Microsoft Refurbisher Program is a global program from Microsoft that enables computer refurbishers to offer used, refurbished PCs and notebooks that have genuine Microsoft software preinstalled. Ten refurbishers in Germany have a license for the program, which was launched in the USA in 2007. Refurbishers participate in this program as Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher or Microsoft Registered Refurbisher .

Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher

The Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR) program is intended exclusively for large, established refurbishers who refurbish a large number of systems and deliver them to private, municipal and commercial customers as well as non-profit organizations with licensed, preinstalled Microsoft original software.

The criteria for admission to MAR are very selective. Therefore, membership in this program is equivalent to an award from Microsoft. MARs work according to strict guidelines to legally protect software providers, hardware manufacturers, retailers and consumers.

The MAR guidelines require that

  • significant quantities of equipment are processed,
  • adequate data erasure and reporting systems are in place,
  • Technical know-how for the pre-installation of Microsoft Windows operating systems is available in large numbers,
  • suitable security measures have been taken to ensure safe handling and storage of high-quality systems and software licenses,
  • compliance with all applicable regulations is regularly checked.

On the basis of the agreements made with Microsoft, participants in the MAR program are able to include particularly favorable operating system licenses with their refurbished computers. However, these licenses are strictly bound to the reconditioned hardware under Microsoft's End User License Agreement (EULA) and may only be used on these computers in accordance with Microsoft's specifications.

Microsoft Registered Refurbisher

The Microsoft Registered Refurbisher program is intended for small and medium-sized refurbishers who also want to offer refurbished PCs with pre-installed Microsoft original products. There are two types of Microsoft Registered Refurbishers software licenses:

  • Commercial licenses are available for distribution to consumers and small business owners.
  • Nonprofit licenses are only available to specific customer groups such as educational institutions, nonprofit charities, and other eligible recipients.

Product availability varies by license type and geographic region.

Certificate of Authenticity

To prove the authenticity of the operating system, Refurbishers apply a Microsoft Windows Certificate of Authenticity (COA) to each of the refurbished PCs with pre-installed Microsoft original software .
