Midões ( Barcelos ) is a place and a former municipality in the Braga district in the Minho province in Portugal . The municipality had 456 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
Culture and sights
The most important structures in the area include the Romanesque church and the disused train station, which is the oldest in the Barcelos district. Until the construction of the bridge over the Cávado in Barcelos, the Midões train station was the terminus for all travelers heading north.
history
According to Professor JJ Bouças in an article in 1929, the name of the place Midões means "Land of Mills". On the way through, Gustave Eiffel once stayed in the "Quinta de Fontelo", which is now used as a venue for weddings and other occasions.
As part of the regional reform on September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Midões and Gamil were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Gamil e Midões .
