The Midmar Nature Reserve is located 15 miles from Pietermaritzburg and 7 miles from Howick in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . The protected area is managed by the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

The 1,000 hectare protected area is home to hartebeest , white-tailed wildebeest , blue buck , springbok , reedbuck , white ram , zebras and numerous waterfowl. Since there are no larger predators, the area can be explored not only by car but also on foot. There is also a colony of the endangered South African crowned crane .

The dammed Umgeni River forms a lake in the reserve, which is frequented by weekend sailors, windsurfers and anglers from the surrounding area.

The so-called Midmar Mile takes place here every February . It is the largest inland swimming competition in the world. The originally quite local event has grown since the first race in 1974 with 153 participants over 5,027 participants in 1994 to over 16,000 participants in 2003.
