history

In the 1840s, travelers heading north from Pietermaritzburg crossed the Umgeni River just west of Howick on Alleman's Drift . In 1849, the Wesleyan missionary James Archbell bought three farms on the north bank of the Umgeni. Ownership deeds of the original area designated the area only The Village on the Umgeni Waterfall ( English for ' The Village on the Umgeni Waterfall '). In 1850 the ford in front of the waterfall was moved. There the crossing was more dangerous, but more practical. The ford was less than 200 meters from where the river tumbled down the cliffs. The place was treacherous and many travelers and covered wagons were washed over the falls. As traffic increased north, the government decided to build a village by the ford and purchased part of Archbell's farm . In November 1850, a notice appeared in the Natal Government Gazette listing 36 village lots at Umgeni Waterfall Drift . This was the beginning of the city.

When naming the government officials wanted to honor their Colonial Minister in London , Earl Gray , who had recently achieved the title of Lord Howick . The name was derived from his father's house Howick Hall in Northumberland in England . Almost simultaneously, two other cities were named Howick : Howick in New Zealand and Howick in Ontario in Canada .

During the Second Boer War from 1899 to 1902, the British set up a concentration camp on the outskirts of the village. Today a memorial on the site commemorates the women and children who died while imprisoned in this camp.

In December 1996 Nelson Mandela was awarded the Freedom of Howick ('Peace of Howick'), where he ( alias David Motsamayi ) was arrested in 1962 in the role of chauffeur of Cecil Williams' car .
